Not what I expected...
The results of the Brackeys Gam Jam are in! Annnd.... I'm kinda shocked. I knew I wouldn't win, but didn't think I'd place this low.
This was without question the most effort I've ever put into my now 10 gam jams under my belt, and in my opinion my best game overall by far. Never before have I placed lower than the top 10% of entries. Somehow this game is my lowest scored game of all time, and breaks my 10th percentile streak.
The most common negative feedback I received was about the controls and camera and the frame rate. I'm afraid that by making my game TOO polished, any shortcomings are either more offensive by contrast, or are reached for to have a reason not to rate high.
I took the entire week off to devote entirely to making this game. It's tempting to be discouraged and think, "well I guess it shows it's not worth putting that much effort in," but I had the time of my life! It was so fun! I don't want to scale back and make games any less quality than I know I'm capable of just to "min/max" and optimize ratings. I know now to make sure the controls and camera feel perfect! Not sure what to do about frame rate though. I guess that's where I'll have to decide how much I want to lean into 3D graphics since inevitably people will rate games lower even if it's their potato PC's fault for ruining the experience. Oh well. It was a fun jam, and I learned a lot!

Hey Ben, don't forget that there is a lot of randomness and variables involved with ratings and you are bound to have some low scoring games. Getting high ratings is fun but the most important thing is how proud of your work you are. Keep doing doing the great and creative work that you do!
Thanks so much for the encouraging reminder! I appreciate the comment.
