Before even playing this, it seems like a board game, Pass the Pigs. In that game, you roll pigs. Depending on how they land, you will either, gain different amounts of points, lose your points from that turn, or lose all your points. Your goal is to get more points then your opponent(s) without losing them.

Yes, it's actually an even older game called "Skunk" but same concept.
